The traditional gel is soft and fluid but maintains its shape, preventing it from leaking like a liquid if the shell is cut.
These implants are filled with a firmer, more form-stable gel. They hold their shape even if the shell is cut. They are typically teardrop-shaped (anatomic) and are designed to provide a more natural slope to the upper breast.
These are circular and provide equal projection across the breast. They tend to create more fullness in the upper part of the breast, especially when upright.
These are shaped to mimic the natural slope of the breast, with more volume at the bottom and a tapered top. They are always textured to prevent rotation, which would distort the breast shape.
Most women and surgeons agree that silicone implants feel more like natural breast tissue compared to saline implants. They are softer and less prone to rippling or wrinkling that can be felt or seen.
They offer a very natural look, especially for women with little native breast tissue. The gel's density and weight closely mimic natural fat.
Modern cohesive gels are designed to stay in place even if the implant shell ruptures, a significant improvement over older, less cohesive models.
If a rupture occurs, surgical removal and replacement of the implant are required. This is a more complex procedure than for a saline implant, which simply deflates.

If a silicone implant ruptures, the gel may remain within the scar tissue capsule (intracapsular rupture) or leak into the surrounding tissue. This often does not cause immediate symptoms or visible change in breast shape, making it "silent." An MRI scan is recommended to screen for silent rupture, typically starting 5-6 years after implantation and then every 2-3 years.
Silicone implants are generally more expensive than saline implants.
The procedure requires a slightly longer incision than saline implants because the pre-filled device needs to be inserted.
The formation of tight, painful scar tissue around the implant, which can distort the breast's shape and feel firm.
A term used by some women to describe a wide range of symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and joint pain that they attribute to their implants. While not an official medical diagnosis, many women report symptom relief after explantation.
A rare and treatable type of T-cell lymphoma associated primarily with certain textured implants.
Infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, implant displacement, and the need for revision surgery in the future.
